The RA: Resident Advisor
Finally...

January 29, 1999...A Friday

Well, here I am. Finally a Resident Advisor at Montana State University...after applying ever since my second semester here. That might be around four or five times.

I'm what they call a mid-year RA. I applied just before the Fall/Winter semester ended. They were in need of some RA's. Particularly female RA's.

I applied yet again, hoping that this time they'd hire me. They did. The feeling was incredible. It made my parents happy to know I got the position. It saves them close to $2500 since the Residence Life Department of the University pays for room, board, and laundry fees. As for me...my work seemed to have finally paid off.

Then, there was the wait of being assigned. I wanted to stay in North Hedges, my home of five semesters. However, the chances of that happening were practically nihl. I suspected, as did a lot of my friends, that I'd be placed across campus in one of the all female residence halls. I didn't like the idea. I got placed in Hannon, nicknamed "The Nunnery."

Hannon is an all female residence hall, but it also includes the Quads, which is reserved basically for honor students and foreign exchange students. We're the biggest staff on campus besides North Hedges. 14 staff members. Three of them are male. Hannon has a 24 hour escort policy, meaning any male wishing to come to Hannon must be accompanied by a female at all times.

I'm still getting used to all this. I visit North Hedges once in awhile to get my dose of testosterone. It's all I can do. I miss 6th floor, and a few of them over there miss me. A lot of my friends say it's not the same. It isn't . I wish at times to be over there.

But...it's a good thing I got placed over in Hannon. For several reasons. One being Josh...

Josh and I agreed that if I had been placed on the North Hedges staff, that things would be very interesting. Things are interesting as it is...

But...this Hannon thing is good on some respects. Not being around guys 24/7 is driving me nuts though.

I miss my guys in Great Falls. I miss just being able to have guys in the hall. A lot of the guys that visit Hannon are visiting girlfriends. That can get so depressing...

Am I making this RA thing sound bad? It isn't. I love it. My floor consists mostly of freshmen. One or two are not. They're labelled "The Loudest and most Social Floor" in Hannon. A loud night for Hannon is a quiet night for North. I love my job...it keeps you busy, but it's worth it.

Some people really don't know what an RA is or does. One of these days I'll put up the Mission Statement from the Resident Advisor Manual they give us.
